Every U.S. Military dog will be brought home, thanks to a new law. These dogs serve faithfully, so it stands to reason that they would fall under the paw-tection of the law! President Barack Obama signed a bill into law at the end of last year that ensures that these dogs have their transportation home covered by the U.S. Military.
In the past, some of these animals were left overseas. They were no longer considered service dogs, and were therefore ineligible for military-funded transportation home, according to The Washington Times. A dog may save hundreds of service members’ lives during his time in service by detecting hidden weapons and explosive devices.
There are an estimated 2,500 dogs currently serving overseas, according to the American Humane Association. To get retired dogs home in the past, humanitarian organizations or the dog handles themselves would have to front the transportation costs, but thanks to this part of the $607 billion National Defense Authorization Act, these special dogs will be assured transportation home to live a more comfortable retirement.
