We have recently been informed about a new trend happening in our area by NorthStar Vets. The number of confirmed and treated cases of Leptospirosis has spiked for pets in our area, including other parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York.
This is a bacterial infection that can be very serious for your pet and your family.
Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, which means it can spread to you and your family. So if your pet has been diagnosed with Leptospirosis, please see your doctor. We encouraged this especially when you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or are immunosupprestant.
Pets often get it by drinking sitting water (such as lakes and pooled water in tires and toys). The bacteria can be spread to humans through infected urine or mucus membranes (such as the eyes, nose, and mouth).
If you notice:
- Excessive drinking
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Yellowing of the gums, skin and/or eyes
- Fever
- Excessive bleeding and bruising
- Excessive urinating
Please call your veterinarian.
If your pet is diagnosed on time they can be cured. This just means antibiotics and other supportive care, without this it can be fatal. Lepospirosis can also lead to kidney and liver failure if it goes untreated.
However, we strongly encourage you to make sure your pet is vaccinated. Prevention is always the best course of action to make sure your pet and your family stays healthy.
