History
Bred for badger hunting, this little dogs have been popular in Germany for Centuries. They were bread specifically with long bodies and short legs so they could fit themselves in a badger’s underground tunnels. They were the go to breed for those living in the country side. It is thought that they are the product of breeding the ancestors of bloodhounds and beagles.
General Personality
There are friendly and curious little dogs. While they are very loving and loyal towards their owners, they are not necessarily a good fit with small children. When getting a puppy, make sure that they are properly socialized with children, strangers, and other animals to help them be more accepting of them. They are extremely protective of their family. Dachshunds have no qualms with letting you know when some one is at the door, they are essentially your mini yet mighty guard dog.
It can be no wonder considering the heritage of the Dachshund that they love to dig.

Health
The long body that Dachshunds are famous for could actually bring them some problems. This is especially true if they become overweight. It is very important to discuss specific dietary needs suited to your furry friend with your veterinarian.

Grooming
Weekly brushing should be fine for these occasional shedders. Dachshunds love to roll around in smelly things, so bath may be required frequently. Keeping up with nail trimming every couple of weeks. Cleaning those long ears is very important. Dirt and bacteria can get trapped in them easily. Take a damp cloth and gently wipe inside the outer ear. Never stick anything inside the ear.
