Flea & Tick Season 2018 | Winslow Animal Hospital Dog & Cat

Flea and Tick Season

The bitter cold and winter storms are behind us now. As the temperature rises and allows us to again spend long hours out in the beauty of the great outdoors, the risk of flea and tick problems rises as well.  While fleas and ticks can find their way to your pet at any time of the year, this is the time where we see an uptick in the number of patients with fleas and ticks.  Many pet owners have stopped their flea and tick prevention in the winter months, when these parasites struggle most, but they need to start them up again quickly! As soon as the weather is warm, fleas and ticks will have begun proliferating and spreading everywhere they can.

Aside from the unsightly nature of fleas and ticks and the disturbing thought of them feeding on the blood of our pets, these creatures are dangerous because of the disease-causing bacteria they carry. Some ticks even carry Lyme disease! We often catch Lyme positive pets through routine blood-work.

Flea bites can cause allergy symptoms in some pets, leading to itching, hair loss, and potentially secondary skin infections. Fleas can also bite people. And those fleas can infest a pet’s fur and quickly spread throughout a home so virulently that an exterminator will be required to eliminate the infestation. This is why monthly prevention is so important!  So before you see any fleas or ticks on your pet, please remember to start them on their preventatives. This saves time and money, as well as provides protection for your furry friend!

There is a variety of flea and tick products available to protect your pets. Call us at 856-875-1323 to purchase your pet’s protection!
