Solar Eclipse: Safe for Pets? | Winslow Animal Hospital Dog & Cat

Today is the eclipse!

With warning after warning on tv, radio, and Internet sources about the potential eye damage associated with the eclipse, many have wondered about their pets’ safety. Are their eyes as vulnerable as ours?

If you are worried about your pets’ eyes, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Animals instinctively tend to avoid looking at the sun (and only those who look directly at the sun are at risk of retinal damage). If you are still concerned that your Furry Friend might be the odd pup out that would look directly at the sun, you can keep them inside from 1-4pm.

update:

Our team enjoyed taking turns going out to see the eclipse! Here you can see Tracy, Karryn, Deb (technician team leader) and Kristen enjoying the view. They especially loved being able to see clouds drift across the crescent sun.
