Elaine is an 8.5 year old Miniature Dachshund. Like many older dogs of her breed, Elaine has been having problems with intervertebral disc disease. Elaine’s disease affects her mid-lumbar spine. In order to improve Elaine’s condiiton, she is treated with Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) including acupuncture with Dr. Amy Hinze.
Dr. Hinze locates specific points along the spine & stimulates them using small sterile needles. These acupoints are then given further stimulation when she attaches electrodes and introduces a weak electric current. The electro-acupuncture unit is on a timer. This added stimulation improves the efficacy of the treatment.
As you can see, Elaine is very calm and comfortable throughout the procedure. Elaine receives these acupuncture treatments every 1-2 weeks. Acupuncture is especially popular for neurological issues, but it can be used for internal health as well. In this case, Dr. Hinze is locating points associated with the health of the liver. The electro-acupuncture unit continues the work for about 20 minutes.
Prior to beginning TCVM treatments, Elaine had been dragging her hind legs. She began acupuncture in early April 2016. She has had much stronger hindquarters since she began regular treatments. In addition to acupuncture, Elaine receives Chinese herbal supplements to improve her health. Dr. Hinze completes the treatment with an injection of vitamin B12.
