All dogs and cats should have their stool tested annually to screen for intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. Many of these parasites can be transmitted to humans such as Toxocara and Giardia, which can put you and your family at risk. We routinely deworm puppies and kittens every 2 weeks until they are 12 weeks of age, and strongly recommend that all other new additions to the family (rescue animals, adopted animals, and strays) be tested as soon as possible so they can be treated before any problems occur. Keeping your dog or cat on monthly heartworm prevention is also very important, as these preventatives also contain deworming agents to keep your animal free of worms.
